Bilbo, of course, battles to safeguard the lives of his companions and protects the Lonely Mountain once the fight breaks out.

Peter Jackson Wanted to Direct the Films

When Peter Jackson was developing his original Lord of the Rings trilogy, he planned to compress the entire story into just two films, fearing that no studio would be willing to take a chance on three. When New Line suggested making an entire trilogy, with one film dedicated to each book, the director was pleasantly surprised, and this proved to be a key factor in The Lord of the Rings’ success, allowing sufficient time for the story to progress naturally. The Hobbit, on the other hand, had the exact opposite effect. Guillermo del Toro’s original plan was to split The Hobbit into two films, but Jackson added a third after taking over, turning a single, modestly-sized novel into three movies creating a new line cinema.

Del Toro left the Production

Del Toro announced to leave the production after Del Toro spent two years. Here’s why Peter Jackson was forced to step in. Del Toro’s pacing of the film was slower than Jackson’s.

The schedule was not changed when Jackson took over the Hobbit films from original director Guillermo del Toro. He was not given the time he needed to storyboard and redesign the world to his specifications.
