Autumn Rugby Internationals 2021 Teams

South Africa has been re-established as the best team globally after their thrilling 31-29 victory over the All Blacks.

The reigning champions ended multiple strings of losses with an epic last-gasp triumph over the team that had replaced them as world number one just a week before.

Before the autumn internationals, the final world rankings were released recently, with the three southern hemisphere giants of South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia ranked first, second, and third, respectively.

Wales would then face all three within the coming weeks, as well as 11th-placed Fiji.

England is ranked fourth among the Six Nations teams, with Ireland fifth, France sixth, and Scotland seventh. Argentina is ranked eighth, with Japan rounding out the top ten.

Wales will move up the rankings in the next month to defeat their southern hemisphere opponents.

Teams to watch out for include:

1. South Africa

They’re in a lot of trouble because their off-field issues are leaking onto the field. They need to sort out the political problems, such as who is in charge of the team and selection, because they have had a terrible tour.

They were thrashed by Ireland, which used to be South Africa’s bread and butter.  Their physical prowess is no match for any other team, but if they prove resilient, there’s a chance to beat them.

2. New Zealand

We can safely say that Rieko Ioane has been the All Blacks’ breakout player this season. It all started with the Blues’ win over the Lions, and he’s gone from strength to strength since then.

He gave a commanding performance against Wales that he appears older than his years, just like Doug Howlett and Joe Rokocoko. Steve Hansen has urged him to stay more involved in the game, and it is paying off.

With six or seven frontline players back at home, New Zealand has handled the tour admirably. Hansen will undoubtedly be pleased.

3. Wales

Even though the results haven’t gone their way, the way they played against New Zealand will give them a lot of confidence going into the South Africa game and then the Six Nations. However, it is still a matter of skill. They were in with a chance against the All Blacks, and then, they’re down 12 points, and you’re left wondering what happened. You’re probably wondering how it got to be 33-18 at the end. However, the attacking spirit was present; the skill levels simply needed a refined touch.

4. Australia

When it comes to vacations, they’ve got a rock under their towels now. The red card against Scotland made a difference, but as New Zealand demonstrated against the Lions, you can make yourself difficult to beat when that happens. Autumn in Australia has been a mixed bag.

It began with an impressive win in Cardiff, and things could have gone differently against England, but they were then thrashed in Scotland. The issue for Australia is that they must field their best XV against the big boys, or else they will struggle. Reece Hodge impressed, and while Stephen Moore’s will be missed by fans, David Pocock will be welcomed back with open arms.

5. France

Brilliance– that hint of that French flair – in the two games against New Zealand, and if you’re a fan, you’d have to remember that there are a lot of injuries and some outstanding young players coming through. However, with Guy Novès in charge, there is no widespread support for what he is attempting, and a draw with Japan is a very disappointing result. They’ve also lost at home to an inferior South Africa team, making you wonder if something needs to be changed.

6. Ireland

Ireland’s first game was against South Africa, and they put a significant marker down there. What has most impressed me is that they have also scouted a few young players – Jacob Stockdale has had fantastic autumn – because the danger for Ireland was that they would become an aging group.

Without a match against New Zealand or Australia, Joe Schmidt has gone about his business quietly. Ireland is a difficult team to play against, which bodes well for big tournaments. You still think of them as playing the territorial game through Johnny Sexton and Conor Murray, but they can also be quite inventive.

7. England

They went undefeated, as expected, and Jones was able to see a few fringe players – Henry Slade, Sam Simmonds, and Charlie Ewels – to see how prepared they are for the upcoming World Cup. They were excellent for the final 20-30 minutes against Australia, but they were inconsistent against Argentina, and given the changes, a few errors were unavoidable against Samoa.

Paul Gustard will be pleased with England’s defensive performance, but their attack was a little patchy. Eddie has shown that he is trying to play an attacking style, but it is based on a solid defence and set-piece. That has always been a strength of England’s because it is what wins tours.

8. Scotland

It was a fantastic result against Australia, and they will be disappointed that the Six Nations does not begin next week. We’ve seen that scoring tries against 14 men can be difficult, but Gregor Townsend has dramatically improved on Vern Cotter’s work. There is a lot of attacking intent, a lot of work rate, and the skill levels have greatly improved.

They learned a lot defensively from what happened in the Samoa game; they tightened up and were also a joy to watch against the All Blacks and Australia. This autumn, they’ve nailed it.
