What would you do if the person you thought was your mom isn’t? That’s what this movie is all about, and the plot is easy to get from the get-go. Run is a story of a young girl, Chloe (Kiera Allen), who’s yearning to explore the outside world, but Sarah Paulson (mom), who molds into a psychotic villain, doesn’t want to let her go because she’s “sick.” This is one to watch, as the ending is not what you might expect.

This movie has one of the best endings that will make you re-watch the movie again and again.

Books of Blood (2020)

books of blood
Imdb rating: 5.6

Director: Brannon Braga

Writer: Clive Barker

Stars: Britt Robertson, Rafi Gavron, Anna Friel, Andy McQueen, Kenji Fitzgerald

Books of Blood is an adaptation of several of the actual Books of Blood tales, divided into three narratives. There’s the tale of Bennet (Yul Vazquez), a hitman who’s after the book of blood. Jenna (Britt Robertson), a young lady who’s about to leave home and stop taking her medication because of recent trauma. There’s Simon (Rafi Gavron), a medium who wants to convince Mary (Anna Friel) that there’s an afterlife following her son’s death. Based on Barker’s writings, the chances of each of these characters having their way at the end are slim, so you should watch to find out what happens.

The film stars Janelle Monae, who plays dual roles, first as Eden, an enslaved character on a plantation with her brothers and sisters. Wrinkles The Clown (2019)

wrinkles the clown 2019
Imdb rating: 4.8

Director: Michael Beach Nichols, Christopher K. Walker

Writer: Michael Beach Nichols, Christopher K. Walker

Stars: D. B. Lambert

Wrinkles The Clown is not a movie but a documentary, something that most people missed. This film is about a mysterious video of a clown on the internet who likes to scare naughty children in Florida. The directors’ take on this film is intriguing and different at the same time. They hold back on the true nature of the clown, Wrinkles, which fuels the suspense, making this film even scarier.

Behind You (2020)

behind you 2020
Imdb rating: 4.2

Director: Andrew Mecham, Matthew Whedon

Writer: Lisa Beck, Jesse Ranney

Stars: Andy Miller, Elizabeth Birkner, Jan Broberg, Aimee-Lynn Chadwick

Behind You is one of those movies that feature familiar conventions but cannot deliver its initial signs of promise. The main plot is about a girl who unwittingly unleashes a demon that haunted her mother and aunt in the past. With commendable performances from its young leads to the director’s take on how the cast deals with the unseen demons near the end, solid spook-a-blast movie fans might like this one.

The Lodge (2019)

the lodge 2019
Imdb rating: 6.1

Director: Veronika Franz, Severin Fiala

Writers: Sergio Casci, Veronika Franz, Severin Fiala

Stars: Riley Keough, Jaeden Lieberher, Lia McHugh

The Lodge made a quick jump from theaters and is one of the best movies on Hulu Plus right now. Riley Keough plays as a fiancée of a man with two kids who don’t seem to like the idea of having a stepmom. Things get really creepy at a retreat in a Frozen Lodge, where aspects of repression and a religious cult manifest. How the director sets this movie outdoors and still makes it feel claustrophobic is just genius.

The Owners (2020)

the owners 2018
Imdb rating: 4.9

Director: Julius Berg

Writer: Julius Berg, Mathieu Gompel

Stars: Maisie Williams, Sylvester McCoy, Rita Tushingham, Jake Curran

This movie is a favorite for people who love pulpy and mean-spirited horror movies. It tells the story of an elderly couple who turn the table on a group of young thieves who break into their house while they’re away. This is Julius Berg’s feature debut, known mostly on French TV, but he still maintains his knack of building up immense suspense and tweaking the technicalities to make a movie creepier. This is a grossed-out but entertaining horror movie on Hulu.

The Clovehitch Killer (2019)

the clovehitch killer 2019
Imdb rating: 6.6

Director: Duncan Skiles

Writers: Christopher Ford

Stars: Dylan McDermott, Charlie Plummer, Samantha Mathis

In the Clovehitch Killer, the director adds the tension with a story that makes up for a lack of surprises with incredible performances from the cast and a dash of wit. The story features Tyler (Charlie Plummer), who goes through some of his father’s items (Don, played by McDermott), only to find disturbing images that show that his father is a killer. The Clovehitch Killer is one of the top horror movies on Hulu and is ideal for those who love a patiently thrilling flick.

Crawl (2019)

crawl 2019
Imdb rating: 6.1

Director: Alexandre Aja

Writer: Michael Rasmussen, Shawn Rasmussen

Stars: Kaya Scodelario, Barry Pepper, Morfydd Clark, Ross Anderson, Jose Palma

This fun, exciting, and razor-sharp film is about a father and a daughter who get trapped in the basement of their house during a hurricane. How did they get here? Haley (Kaya Scodelario) ignored evacuation orders to look for her missing dad (Barry). After finding him gravely injured in the house, she can’t get him out because of the water. As if things couldn’t get any worse, the floodwaters have gigantic alligators. Crawl is a desperate fight for life from the jaws of monsters; what’s there not to like about this thriller movie on Hulu.

Shadow In the Cloud (2020)

shadow in the cloud 2020
Imdb rating: 4.8

Director: Roseanne Liang

Writers: Max Landis, Roseanne Liang

Stars: Chloe Grace Moretz, Nick Robinson, Beulah Koale

Set in the deep end of WW2, the director tries to blend historical facts with outrageous fantasy, and it’s up to you to tell if this strategy works or not. Captain Maude Garrett, played by Chloe Grace Moretz, joins the male-dominated B-17 Bomber Squad aboard a plane carrying a top-secret package. The package has some evil lurking within, taking the squad by surprise. Shadow in the Cloud is an enjoyable action-horror movie on Hulu with jump off the seat monster fight scenes.

Saint Maud (2019)

saint maud 2019
Imdb rating: 6.7

Director: Rose Glass

Writers: Rose Glass

Stars: Morfydd Clark, Jennifer Ehle, Lily Frazer

Saint Maud is director Rose Glass’s debut, and the directing skills are apparent in how the film balances tension and suspense to provide an unsettling experience. The movie tells the story of Maud, a devoted hospice nurse who becomes obsessed with saving the souls of her dying patients. However, just like in a good horror movie, her sinful past and some forces that are up to no good won’t let her have her way. This is one of the best psychological horror movies on Hulu, with a disquieting blend of psychological and creepy thrill.

Spree (2020)

spree 2020
Imdb rating: 5.9

Director: Eugene Kotlyarenko

Writers: Gene McHugh, Eugene Kotlyarenko

Stars: Joe Keery, Sasheer Zamata, David Arquette

This is an Indie horror movie, and the director, who’s developing a knack for delivering great films, doesn’t disappoint. The star of the show is Keery, who elevates the film beyond its relatively plagiaristic narrative. Spree is a movie about Keery, a rideshare driver desperate for a social media following. He later comes up with a deadly plan to go viral. If you’re looking for a horror movie that bridges the gap between old and new media without being too obvious, then Spree is the one. This is a great horror movie on Hulu and is one for the cyber age.

The House That Jack Built (2018)

the house that jack built 2020
Imdb rating: 6.8

Director: Lars Von Trier

Writers: Lars Von Trier

Stars: Matt Dillon, Bruno Ganz, Uma Thurman

The film features disturbing violence and sadistic behavior, so prepare yourself. The House That Jack Built is about a failed architect and a violent sociopath (Jack, Matt Dillon), who retells his murders as he views them. He details them as you would expect from a serial killer, like works of art. This is another one of the best psychological horror movies on Hulu and definitely one of the most provoking. The director creates a storyline that challenges and provokes the viewer to take in the horrors on screen and go deeper into finding the actual message.

The Wretched (2019)

the wretched 2019
Imdb rating: 5.8

Directors: Brett Pierce, Drew T. Pierce

Writers: Brett Pierce, Drew T. Pierce

Stars: John-Paul Howard, Piper Curda, Jamison Jones

Written and directed by the Pierce brothers, The Wretched is about a defiant teenage boy Ben (John-Paul Howard), who’s convinced that the strange events next door are down to witchcraft. A lot is going on in this film, like the imminent divorce of Ben’s parents and the search for a community that can take the plot to oblivion. But the directors (should I also say writers) create a good balance that makes the movie fun, thrilling for a modest horror film.

Possessor (2020)

possessor 2020
Imdb rating: 6.5

Director: Brandon Cronenberg

Writers: Brandon Cronenberg

Stars: Andrea Riseborough, Christopher Abbott, Tuppence Middleton

Possessor is director Brandon Cronenberg’s best work and his first go at the horror genre. It’s set in a world where people can possess other bodies and do things they would never remember. The main character, Tasya Vos, is an elite assassin who takes over other people’s bodies using technology to target high-profile targets. This movie is genuinely horrific and gothic, and the version on Hulu is the “Uncut” one so, prepare yourself.

Amulet (2020)

amulet 2020
Imdb rating: 4.8

Director: Romola Garai

Writers: Romola Garai

Stars: Carla Juri, Imelda Staunton, Alec Secareanu

The film is not only creepy but bloody and weird and gets interesting as the story progresses. Amulet tells the story of a soldier sympathetic towards a young woman and helps her and her housebound mother. It’s one of the most technically ambitious horror movies on Hulu right now. Romola Garai, the director, creates a solid, intelligent, and disquieting slow-building horror movie with a chilly sense of dread on her debut.

Sputnik (2020)

sputnik 2020
Imdb rating: 6.4

Director: Egor Abramenko

Writers: Oleg Malovichko, Andrei Zolotarev

Stars: Pyotr Fyodorov, Oksana Akinshana, Fedor Bondarchuk

Sputnik is about a controversial young doctor who’s called up to a secluded space and science research facility to examine a cosmonaut who returns to earth with an alien parasite inside him. This movie has rage, thriller, and best of all, romance as Tatyana (Oksana Akinshina) becomes attracted to her patient. This is a space alien horror movie on Hulu that proves some good sci-fi, thriller, and mystery films in the galaxy still exist.

12 Hour Shift (2020)

12 hour shift 2020
Imdb rating: 5.4

Director: Brea Grant

Writer: Brea Grant

Stars: Angela Bettis, Chloe Franworth, Nikea Gamby-Turner

This is a gruesome dark comedy from director and writer Brea Grant filled with dishonest characters and, wait for it, body organs. The story is about a drug-addicted nurse and her cousin who try to “find” a replacement kidney for an organ trafficker. Well, things don’t go as well as they planned, and bodies pile up. This movie is entertaining, nasty, and is one of the best comedy horror movies on Hulu.

Lights Out (2016)

lights out 2016

Director: David F. Sandberg

Writer: Eric Heisserer

Stars: Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman, Ana Girardot, Audrey Bastien

Lights Out is about Rebecca (Teresa Palmer), who leaves home, hoping to leave all her childhood fears behind her. As a young girl, she was never sure of what’s real at night when lights went out. Now, her little brother (Gabriel Bateman) is going through the same terrifying events she went through. What causes these events? A supernatural entity that’s somehow attached to their mother (Maria Bello). David F. Sandberg creates a well-orchestrated movie that’s really frightening. This horror movie is available on Hulu, but you’ll need a bedside lamp when you’re done.

Hunter Hunter (2020)

hunter hunter 2020
Imdb rating: 6.4

Director: Shawn Linden

Writer: Shawn Linden

Howell) find life extremely difficult without him. There’s a noise outside their cabin, and mother and daughter hope it’s the return of Joseph. What they’re left with is a severely injured man and a mysterious predator in the woods threatening their home. The director takes a slow approach in this movie, and everything works out perfectly. Catch this horror movie on Hulu, and you won’t regret it.

Pet Sematary (2019)

However, they discover a burial ground in the woods near their home. Something tragic happens, and the family turns to their neighbor, starting off a weird reaction with horrific and evil outcomes. Pet Semetary is a new adaptation of a Stephen King book, and the directors create a sleek update of King’s novel.

Wounds (2019)

wounds 2019
Imdb rating: 4

Director: Babak Anvari

Writer: Babak Anvari

Stars: Armie Hammer, Dakota Johnson, Zazie Beetz

Wounds might not be the most thrilling and nail-biting movie out there, but it has its shivering and unsettling moments. The film is directed so that you’d have to go back and see if there’s something you missed. This movie is about disturbing and mysterious things that unfold when a bartender brings home a phone that he finds at his bar. This horror movie on Hulu is a good watch but is not thrilling enough for horror genre enthusiasts.

The Other Lamb (2019)

the other lamb 2019
Imdb rating: 5.2

Director: Małgorzata Szumowska

Writer: Catherine S. McMullen

Stars: Raffey Cassidy, Michiel Huisman, Denise Gough, Ailbhe Cowley

Raffey Cassidy (Selah) produces a performance that’s beyond her years. The Other Lamb is about a young lady born into an all-female cult, but she questions the teachings of her leader, something you shouldn’t do in a cult. What you get is a movie with sinister motives, an impressive atmosphere, and surreal horror. The one thing that will grab your attention about this movie is how the director captures her story in breathtaking landscapes.

The Vigil (2019)

the vigil 2019
Imdb rating: 5.7

Director: Keith Thomas

Writer: Keith Thomas

Stars: Dave Davis, Fred Melamed, Menashe Lustig

Imdb rating: 5.4

Director: Oz Perkins

Writer: Rob Hayes

Stars: Sophia Lillis, Samuel Leakey, Alice Krige, Charles Babalola

This movie is a classic fairytale, but on this one, the director, Oz Perkins, breathes new life into the classic story. The sets, designs, and performances are fantastic, but some critics claim the movie doesn’t invoke interest and is not interesting enough. The story is about Gretel and Hansel, two siblings left to fend for themselves when their mother goes mad. Lonely and hungry, the pair find food outside an isolated house but are welcomed inside by a friendly owner. However, the kids become wary of his mysterious behavior.

Imdb rating: 6.5

Spontaneous is one of the best comedy horrors on Hulu and centers on the life of two high school seniors Mara and Dylan. When students in their school start exploding (literally), the two start living every moment like their last and love blossoms. This movie is hysterical, fun, and timely. Whether this is director Brian Duffield’s way of reminding the audience about school shootings is up for debate. Still, the movie works as a horror-comedy.

Train to Busan (2016)

Train to Busan 2016
Imdb rating: 7.6

Director: Yeon Sang-ho

Writer: Yeon Sang-ho

Stars: Gong Yoo, Ma Dong-seok, Choi Woo-sik

Train to Busan is not just another zombie apocalypse movie but one of the best zombie flicks of our time. As the title suggests, this movie is about zombies on a train and a father’s desperate attempts to save his daughter. This South Korean movie has non-stop energy and is purely entertaining from start to end. The director pulled no punches on this one and cleverly used cramped quarters to present a film that’s not only fast-paced but horrific, full of action and emotion.

Mary is one of the supernatural horror movies on Hulu about a family that buys a ship only to discover that it holds dark secrets. This movie has everything set up for a spooky horror movie. Think about it, a family buys a boat, takes a sailing trip only to discover something isn’t right while in isolated waters. However, the director doesn’t follow this route, and all that’s left is a horror movie in name only. This movie only appeals to viewers content with call and rescue movies.

He plays God by making a man from body parts and brings him to life in his loft. In the end, this movie is more than a new take on Frankenstein’s myth but one that identifies the nature of identity, memory, love, and point of view in our society. It has solid, creepy elements that qualify it as a horror/thriller film.

Stars: Robert Englund, Lin Shaye, Grayson Gabriel, Sumer H. Howell, Michael Sirow

The Midnight Man is about a girl who unintentionally summons a creature (The Midnight Man) when playing a game with her friends. As much as the plot and the theme of this movie are not unique, the director creates a good-time horror film that fans of the genre will adore. Director: Abe Forsythe

Writer: Abe Forsythe

Stars: Lupita Nyong’o, Josh Gad, Stephen Peacocke

Lupita Nyong’o always delivers on all her films, and she lives up to expectations on this one. Little Monsters proves that the zombie genre still has areas left to explore, especially when blending with bits of comedy and director Abe Forsythe does this so well. The movie is about a washed-up musician and a teacher who team up to protect the kids from zombies. This is a jagged little gem of a film that works for all audiences.

High Rise (2015)

high rise 2015

Director: Ben Wheatley

Writer: Amy Jump

Stars: Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller

Tom Hiddleston plays the role of a doctor in this film who moves into a London skyscraper with high tensions and class warfare among the people threatening to cause pure anarchy. Wheatley takes on a subject that’s too British and makes it contemporary to present a message that’s timely and simple. This movie falls in the horror, comedy, and drama category, but it’s unapologetically weird, making it even more enjoyable.

Southbound (2015)

southbound 2015

Southbound features interlocking tales of highway terror that circle around evil spirits at a truck stop, a home invasion, an accident, and a mysterious traveler. It’s easy for a movie with 4 different tales to miss its mark, but the directors present a film filled with grisly thrills on a “horror” road smoothly. This movie delivers everything you can expect from an anthology film with suspicion, symbolism, chills, and, best of all, consistency. Southbound is the best horror suspense movie you can watch on Hulu right now.
