Jennifer Hudson bags the EGOT status for herself. The uber-talented actress and singer is the 17th artist in history and the second black woman to earn the EGOT status after Whoopi Goldberg. She has been one of the producers for ‘A Strange Loop’ and won the Tony award for the best musical. At the moment, this talent queen has it all: an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and now a Tony.
Hudson once came seventh in the ‘American Idol’ season three, and since then she has come a long way and through an impressive journey to say the least to achieve this rare status. Once the 75th Tony Awards took place, Hudson’s name was on the top of the trending list since Sunday, June 12.
A few other EGOT winners are Mel Brooks, Mike Nicholes, Andrew Lloyd Webber, John Legend, Alan Menken and Rita Moreno.
What is an EGOT status?
In case you didn’t know people who have won all four of the big awards i.e, Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony are declared EGOT winners. In Hollywood, it’s referred to as the “grand slam” of show business.
Here’s a recap for you: Jennifer Hudson won an Oscar for her role in ‘Dreamgirls (2007)’. Then she went on to grab two Grammy awards. She won her Emmy for the animated short Baba Yaga (2020) which she co-produced and also voiced a character.
While talking to People in 2020 about becoming an EGOT, Hudson had said jokingly:
“I should get two more dogs. I got a dog and named it Oscar, and then I won my Oscar. And then I got a dog and named it Grammy, and then I won my Grammy. So I think I should get some dogs and name them Emmy and Tony- and it’ll give me good luck, and I’ll win. [They’re] like my good luck charms.”

Currently, Hollywood has five black legends who are EGOT winners. Other black artists who have made it big in the industry are: ‘Pose’ Star Michaela Jaé Rodriguez who became the first trans actress to win a Golden Globe. We wish the EGOT winners the best of luck for their future as they continue to rise and shine.
