John Oliver returned for another episode of Last Week Tonight, this time slamming HBO’s House of the Dragon. The comedian poked fun at the grim sequences in the Game of Thrones spinoff, which have proven to be divisive among viewers.
While the issue was transgender rights and a little girl expressing her dissatisfaction with the school’s toilet situation, Oliver attempted to lighten the mood by making fun of the HBO fantasy series.
“That is brutal! “It’s actually difficult to see because it’s so dark,” Oliver said of the little transgender girl talking about having security personnel when she goes to the bathroom.
“Which would also, coincidentally, be a pretty accurate tagline for House of the Dragon.” Oliver added.
The tagline on the screen said, “It’s so dark that it’s genuinely hard to watch.”
Viewers expressed their dissatisfaction with the darkness of various scenes when Episode 7 of House of the Dragon aired. The episodes appeared to have been shot during the day but were darkened in post production to look to be in the evening. You can also enjoy watching all the released episodes of House of the Dragon series even if you live outside of the USA.
Some viewers were annoyed that they were required to modify the settings on their televisions, and some took their frustrations out on social media:
I’m gonna need @hbomax to issue a written apology for literally a whole episode of black screen of #HouseOfTheDragon
This is ridiculous.

However, the customer support Twitter account for HBO Max responded to comments made by certain fans who claimed that the dimly lit moments were intentional.
“We appreciate you reaching out about a night scene in House of the Dragon: Episode 7 appearing dark on your screen. The dimmed lighting of this scene was an intentional creative decision. Thanks!” the Twitter handle for HBOMaxHelp tweeted.
This week’s episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver can be seen on HBO and HBO Max every Sunday night at 11 p.m. ET.
