Netflix announces 2023 slate of Korean movies and dramas

Netflix has revealed its plans for its next Squid Game, including the streaming service’s biggest-ever lineup of Korean television shows and movies. Netflix has always been known for its diverse content, catering to audiences from all over the world. But now, the streaming giant is taking a big step forward with its biggest-ever Korean film and TV slate.

This includes the highly-anticipated sequel to the popular series “The Glory,” “Kill Boksoon” – a crime thriller set in South Korea, and “Crash Course in Romance” – a romantic comedy that promises to be a refreshing take on the genre.

This morning in Korea, the full slate of 34 shows was unveiled, including a great deal of programming that had been previously announced and brand-new material in both the scripted and non-scripted spaces. There will be a total of six films from Korea that will be shown, including the sci-fi thriller JUNG-E and Kill Boksoon, both of which will have their world premieres at the Berlin Film Festival.

Crash Course in Romance, which Deadline chose as one of its top international dramas to watch in 2023, Behind Your Touch [working title], and other social commentary series such as Bloodhounds are among the offerings in the realm of television dramas.

The second part of the vengeance thriller The Glory will premiere later this year. With more than 80 million watching hours, The Glory was Netflix’s most-watched non-English television program the previous week.

In addition, there are a few other reality programs, such as the zombie survival game Zombieverse and the Physical: 100 adventure format. “Over the last year, Korean series and films have regularly featured in our Global Top 10 list in more than 90 countries, and three of Netflix’s most-watched shows ever are from Korea,” explained Content VP Don Kang.

“This year, we’re pushing the envelope further with our stories and how we tell them. With this lineup of Korean titles, Netflix will continue to be the ultimate destination for compelling, diverse, and must-watch Korean storytelling.”

Since the launch of Squid Game in 2021, the streaming service has been capitalizing on the show’s runaway success. They have plans to produce another season of the show and an entertainment format that will be produced by the show’s UK independent production companies, Studio Lambert and The Garden.

According to data released this morning, the number of Korean content on the platform increased somewhat to 93 over the previous year. However, the proportionate increase was less than that of Japan, the United Kingdom, and Spain. The number of content hours produced in Japan has increased by 100%, passing the 123 mark. The best 50 Korean Dramas are must-watch if you want something interesting.
