Meghan Markle Addresses Abortion Rights And Says Men Need To Be Vocal, “The Consequences Impact All of Us”

The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle talked to Jessica Yelling, an award-winning journalist regarding the Supreme Court’s decision of Roe. v Wade for a Vogue issue, published on Tuesday. She spoke about Harry’s thoughts, and said “his reaction last week was guttural, like mine.”

“Men need to be vocal in this moment and beyond because these are decisions that affect relationships, families, and communities at large. They may target women, but the consequences impact all of us. My husband and I talked about that a lot over the past few days. He’s a feminist too.”

Markle stressed how it was more than ever for people “to band together” now.

The mother of two went on to say:

“I know that for many women right now, there is a sentiment of despair. But again, we have to band together and not wallow. We have to do the work. This moment requires unity – really listening to people, understanding the Constitution was written at a time when women were second-class citizens. We’re not. Certain things need to change.”

She continued:

“I think it’s equally about honoring the people who’ve been doing the work long before us, like [feminist icon] Gloria [Steinem],” she continued. “I’m grateful that I’m holding a baton right there next to her and that we will continue to be doing this work together.”

The duchess also mentioned her miscarriage. Back in 2020, she wrote a piece for The New York Times in which she talked about her miscarriage in detail in the hopes of helping others who go through the same as her. She and her husband, Prince Harry, 37, are parents of two children: Archie, 3, and Lilibet, 1. She said:

“I think about how fortunate I felt to be able to have both of my children. I know what it feels like to have a connection to what is growing inside of your body. What happens with our bodies is so deeply personal, which can also lead to silence and stigma, even though so many of us deal with personal health crises.”

Speaking about her experience she said:

“I know what miscarrying feels like, which I’ve talked about publicly. The more that we normalize the conversation about the things that affect our lives and bodies, the more people are going to understand how necessary it is to have protections in place.”

Meghan also said:

“This is about women’s physical safety. It’s also about economic justice, individual autonomy, and who we are as a society. Nobody should be forced to make a decision they do not want to make, or is unsafe, or puts their own life in jeopardy.”

Meghan addressed how much it means to have the liberty of making a choice on your own:

“Frankly, whether it’s a woman being put in an unthinkable situation, a woman not ready to start a family, or even a couple who deserves to plan their family in a way that makes the most sense for them, it’s about having a choice.”

Markle also mentioned how grateful she was that they were able to have open conversations about giving birth and abortions. She was talking about Steinem, 88, who recently shared her abortion experience.

“It’s interesting that here you’re talking to two women: one who chose to give birth happily, and one who chose not to give birth happily, and we’re both prospering because we were able to make our own choices. Incredible.”

The former actress from “Suits” also described how the ruling will be putting the lives of many women across the country at risk.

“This is having a very real impact on women’s bodies and lives starting now. Women are already sharing stories of how their physical safety is being put in danger. Women with resources will travel to get an abortion, those without might attempt to give themselves one at tremendous risk.”

She added:

“Some will have to source abortion pills from unregulated pharmacies. Others who are pregnant and find themselves in a medical emergency will be at the mercy of doctors and lawyers to determine if a procedure that is needed to save her life can even be done at all. What does this tell women? It tells us that our physical safety doesn’t matter, and as a result that we don’t matter. But we do. Women matter.”

Roe v. Wade was a historical landmark of 1973 that the Supreme Court overturned with a single decision. It granted women the right to get an abortion if they wanted one. But with the ruling on June 24th, the constitutional right to get an abortion has been eliminated, instead, the decision has been placed in the hands of individual states to approve or disapprove the procedure.

As a result, more than half the states will be practicing abortion bans. Pregnant women who wish to go through with abortion already had to put up with a nearly complete ban in Oklahoma and a complete prohibition in Texas after six weeks.

At least 8 other states – Arizona, Alabama, Missouri, Kentucky, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and South Dakota – have stopped performing abortions ever since the ruling was announced.

In Ohio, most abortions are banned after the first detectable heartbeat, ever since a federal judge dissolved the injunction because of which the measure was on hold for three years. Utah’s law will also be revised with not much room to allow abortions to take place freely.

Ever since the ruling has been announced people have been vocalizing their thoughts on social media. A number of celebrities called out the Supreme Court for banning abortion rights instead of banning guns in public. Many of them expressed their disappointment in being an American because the Supreme Court stripped off a basic right for women.

Billie Eilish and Phoebe Bridgers also went on to condemn the SCOTUS ruling at the Glastonbury Music Festival and vocalized their hatred for the Supreme Court decision-makers by chanting “F— the Supreme Court”

What are your thoughts about Roe v. Wade overturning and the American women’s right to their bodily autonomy?
