Bangladesh’s fast bowler Ebadot Hossain will miss the ODI Asia Cup in Pakistan and Sri Lanka due to a knee injury, according to an announcement by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Tuesday. The 29-year-old right-arm quick sustained the injury during a one-day international series against Afghanistan last month.
Despite hopes of a swift recovery, Ebadot’s knee injury has not healed sufficiently for him to be considered for the six-nation Asia Cup. However, the BCB remains optimistic that he will regain fitness in time for the upcoming ODI World Cup.
Debashis Chowdhury, the BCB’s chief physician, revealed that Ebadot’s anterior cruciate ligament injury requires further treatment. The Asia Cup is scheduled to take place from August 30 to September 17, while the World Cup is set to begin in India on October 5, 2023.
Acknowledging the significance of the Bangladesh team’s upcoming major event, Chowdhury emphasized the board’s commitment to exploring all available safe medical options to ensure Ebadot’s full recovery.
In response to Ebadot’s absence, the BCB has called up uncapped pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib as his replacement. The 20-year-old has displayed promising performance, having taken 57 wickets from 37 List A matches. Notably, Sakib secured nine wickets in three matches during the recent Emerging Men’s Asia Cup.
With Sakib’s inclusion, the squad now features five players from the 2020 ICC U19 World Cup-winning team. Alongside Tawhid Hridoy, Shoriful Islam, Shamim Hossain, and Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Sakib joins the Asia Cup squad. In Group B of the Asia Cup, Bangladesh will compete alongside Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.
Despite Ebadot’s setback, Bangladesh remains hopeful that the emerging talent of players like Tanzim Hasan Sakib and the cohesion of their squad will contribute to a competitive performance in the upcoming Asia Cup, as they prepare to face off against strong opponents.
