What is the Major League Soccer Season About?
Major League Soccer (MLS) is a professional league of men’s soccer certified by the United States Soccer Federation. MLS was started back in 1993 and its inaugural season was played by ten teams, which was held back in 1996.
A complete MLS season consists of the Regular Season, Decision Day, Play-Offs, and MLS Cup. The regular season of MLS usually commences by the end of February or the first week of March and concludes by the end of October. A total of 28 teams, 25 from the USA and 3 from Canada participate in a single season.
Throughout the season the teams will play 34 matches each. The participating teams are divided into two divisions called conferences (Eastern Conference and Western Conference). The team with the finest record is awarded the Supporters’ Shield.
After the regular season, fourteen teams then compete in the postseason MLS Cup Playoffs during late October and early November, concluding the MLS calendar with the league’s championship game, the MLS Cup.
MLS 2022 Season Review and Prediction
The MLS 2022 season is going to offer an enthralling and intense footballing action. Where defending champions would like to retain the title, their competitors will also go all guns blazing to clinch the title. Experienced players will try to help their teams perform well, while young guns will also try to showcase their potential to the world of football.
New York City FC
New York City FC is the defending champion of the MLS Cup after they won the final against the Portland Timbers in 2021. This was the first-ever MLS Cup for New York City FC. They also had an incredible regular season before clinching the MLS Cup title.
They will like to continue their impressive run with their key players like Maxi Moralez, Valentín Castellanos, and Keaton Parks.
Portland Timbers
Portland Timbers played impressively in the final and the last-gasp equalizer in the 2021 MLS Cup final against New York City FC pushed the game to penalties. However, spot kicks stopped the Timbers from lifting their second MLS Cup Trophy.
Real Salt Lake City
Real Salt Lake City saw their team having one of the best seasons last year but could not maintain the impressive run till the final. For the Salt Lake-based football club, this year can be a potential game-changer after last season’s disappointing end.
Philadelphia Union
Philadelphia Union came second in the Eastern Conference regular-season and finished the 2021 MLS season on a high note by qualifying for the playoffs. The Union eventually reached the semi-finals of the MLS Cup playoffs, but New York City FC stopped them from their first-ever final outing.
