As a documentary aficionado, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news from the BBC today. Clare Sillery, the mastermind behind BBC’s documentary commissioning, just announced a lineup that’s sure to captivate us all: two brand-new documentary series and an enthralling single film.
Here’s the official announcement:

First on the list is “Hunting Mr Nice,” a project in collaboration with BBC Cymru Wales. Created by Passion Pictures and the Welsh independent company Kailash Films, this series dives deep into the life of the legendary cannabis smuggler Howard Marks, famously known as ‘Mr Nice’.
Then, there’s “Our Town: The Day that Ended in a Riot,” a two-part series sure to spark conversation. Hosted by the award-winning journalist Mobeen Azhar and produced by Forest, this series zeroes in on a peaceful protest outside a hotel in Knowsley in February 2023, which spiraled into violence.
And finally, marking five years since the pandemic that changed our lives, “Our Pandemic” is a single film directed by Catey Sexton. This deeply personal narrative explores the pandemic’s impact through the eyes of those who’ve suffered the most profound loss—their loved ones to COVID-19.
I love watching documentaries like these because they enlighten and provoke thought, offering a lens through which we can explore the complexities of human nature, societal issues, and historical events from a safe distance. Each documentary serves as a window into real lives and real struggles, allowing me to gain insights into worlds vastly different from my own.
Clare had this to say about the development:
“Documentaries at the BBC are in fantastic shape, bringing broad audiences to distinctive, high impact content, from the recent Sarah Everard: The Hunt for Justice and the Miners’ Strike: a Frontline Story to the award-winning Once Upon a Time in Northern Ireland.”
The BBC has once again upped the ante, and as someone who lives and breathes documentaries, I’m here for it.
