Exciting news for documentary lovers! The BBC Factual team recently announced the launch of “On Thin Ice: Putin V Greenpeace“, a riveting series of six 30-minute episodes destined for BBC Two and the iPlayer.
This series unveils the extraordinary tale of a group of bold climate activists. Embarking on a mission to halt Russia’s Arctic oil drilling, they unexpectedly find themselves at the heart of a defining moment in Putin’s tense stand-off with the West. Their journey leads to their capture and imprisonment in a notoriously harsh Russian jail.
Sreya Biswas, the dynamic head of BBC’s Natural History Commissioning, shared her enthusiasm:
“This series is a breath of fresh air in environmental storytelling, offering a gripping narrative through its exceptional 360-degree perspective. It presents an urgent environmental story in an engaging and thought-provoking format, making it a must-watch in today’s environmental climate, spread across six lively episodes.”
The year was 2013, and Russia was on the verge of a groundbreaking venture – extracting the world’s first offshore Arctic oil. A vessel operated by Greenpeace set sail towards the oil rig, aiming to capture a protest to curb the frenzied chase for Arctic oil.
For some activists, it was their initiation into direct action, and the reality of what awaited them was beyond their imagination. With Russian security forces keeping a watchful eye, a directive from the highest authority made it clear.
These protesters would serve as a stern warning to anyone daring to challenge Russia’s quest for oil dominance.

This action-filled series brings to light a treasure trove of previously unseen footage, extensive actual recordings from the time of the protest and its aftermath, alongside cinematic reconstructions and heart-to-heart interviews.
This immersive storytelling technique places viewers right in the middle of the unfolding drama. With extraordinary access to both sides of the story, the series offers insights from the Russians involved, British and Russian politicians, the detained protesters, and senior Greenpeace officials.
This documentary is reminiscent of another one called Putin vs the West. You can watch both on BBC iPlayer abroad using ExpressVPN.
