Last night I had the pleasure of witnessing something truly remarkable on BBC Two. It was the grand finale of Mastermind’s 51st series, and, oh, what a finale it was!
Ruth Hart, a Charity Engagement Manager from Glasgow, clinched the title of the 2024 Mastermind Champion, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. Seeing her triumph in her very first TV appearance was nothing short of inspiring.
Ruth, with her impressive tally of 28 points, including a flawless score in her specialist subject on Francis Bacon, left everyone in awe. Her journey to the top is even more commendable, considering this was her first-ever foray into TV.
This is what she had to say:
Never expected to be typing this, but I am in the @MastermindQuiz Grand Final tomorrow evening, 7pm on BBC2! I’ll be answering questions on one of my first loves, the artist Francis Bacon. A wonderful experience with the loveliest bunch of people – do tune in! pic.twitter.com/rxr7uLLTb2

The win took her by surprise, especially after a rocky start in the general knowledge round.
What touched me deeply was Ruth’s backstory. She shared how Mastermind had been a beacon of hope during her early days of grieving her father’s passing.
Ruth’s victory is a beacon of encouragement for young women and novices in the quizzing world. Her experience underscores that with determination and passion, intimidating barriers can indeed be overcome.
The camaraderie and support from everyone involved in Mastermind were highlighted as key factors in her brilliant experience.
🏆 There’s a new #Mastermind Champion!

Clive Myrie’s admiration for Ruth’s achievement and Jimmy Mulville’s reflection on the significance of the Mastermind Final captured the essence of what it means to be a part of such a prestigious competition.
It’s not about the prize but the honor and the challenge.
As a fan of quiz shows, Ruth’s story is not just another win; it’s a narrative of resilience, legacy, and the pure joy of quizzing. You can apply for the next series of Mastermind from the official website of BBC Mastermind, applications close on Friday 10th May 2024.
Mastermind continues to captivate and inspire, and I’m already looking forward to what the next series will bring.
