‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ Becomes one of the Highest-Grossing IMAX Releases: Pulled $105 Million in Overall Earnings

Star Wars Rogue One highest Imax release ever

With the premiere of Star Wars: Andor just around the corner, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was rereleased to honor it in theaters this weekend. Andor will be led by the titular role star Diego Luno, and the movie will serve as a prequel to Rogue One

Apart from the movie getting a rerun on IMAX this weekend since its 2016’s original release, the screenings also featured a sneak peek at its prequel, Andor. Apparently, the audience’s love for Rogue One continues to be strong as the movie quickly became one of the highest-grossing IMAX movies of all time.

James Clevenger (@CL3V3NG3R) revealed on Twitter how much he loved going to the frequent re-release of Star Wars: Rogue One at IMAX:

As per Collider reports, Rogue One was re-released across 255 domestic IMAX theaters on the weekend and earned more than $1 million in ticket sales, pushing its overall earning to $105 million, resulting in Rogue One becoming one of the 10th highest-grossing movies to be released on IMAX.

@ERCboxoffice reported Rogue One: A Star Wars Story collected over $1.1M across 255 IMAX locations:

@ForeTimePod also shared his two cents on the movie after catching the re-release:

Fandango wrote:

“Experience Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in select IMAX theaters. Plus, get an exclusive look at the new Disney+ Star Wars series, Andor! In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. “

“This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.”

The co-writer for Rogue One, Tony Gilroy, is the showrunner for Andor. Just recently, while talking to Variety, he talked about working on some original ideas for Star Wars and also explained why they won’t be catering to “fan service” anymore. To be precise, Gilroy said that people didn’t have to be Star Wars fans in particular to enjoy the show.

You should be able to watch the show and not give a shit about Star Wars ever, or [have ever] seen any Star Wars. This show should work on its own. The hope, the dream, is that the really hardcore Star Wars community will embrace the show in a new way — that they’ll be thrilled to have someone come in and completely uncynically get down molecularly in their world and treat it like a real thing.

Regarding the show’s story, Gilroy said:

“I wanted to do it about real people. They’ve made all this IP about the royal family, in essence. It’s been great. But there’s a billion, billion, billion other beings in the galaxy.”

“There’s plumbers and cosmeticians. Journalists! What are their lives like? The revolution is affecting them just as much as anybody else. Why not use the Star Wars canon as a host organism for absolutely realistic, passionate, dramatic storytelling?”

Star Wars: Andor releases on Disney Plus on September 21st. Don’t forget to tune into yet another adventurous ride of Star Wars. In case you live outside of the USA, here’s how you can watch Star Wars: Andor on Disney Plus.
